Industry leaders launch Asia-Pacific LGBTQIA+ executive fellowship

Program participants unlearn traditional managerial wisdom and adapt it to queer leadership

The University of Sydney Business School and The Pinnacle Foundation have launched a five-day intensive LGBTQIA+ Executive Fellowship targeting mid to senior LGBTQIA+ leaders and allies from all industries and sectors across Australia, Asia and the Pacific.

The inaugural LGBTQIA+ Executive Fellowship will run from Monday 25 September to Friday 29 September at The University of Sydney Business School’s Sydney CBD campus. The Fellowship will be offered bi-annually thereafter.

The inaugural LGBTQIA+ Executive Fellowship will be limited to 50 participants and include an exploration of leadership, design-thinking mindsets, unlearning managerial wisdoms and strategic thinking. The fellowship includes a series of special evening events to ensure richness of learning and opportunities to forge lasting and impactful networks and connections.

With so many organisations across the Asia Pacific seeking to leverage the benefits of diverse leadership, and currently with relatively few “out” leaders, the fellowship delivers a focused leadership development solution.

Program facilitators will include:

  • Professor Kevin Lowe, Professor of Leadership
  • Professor Kai Riemer, Professor of Information Technology and Organisation
  • Professor Betina Szkudlarek, Professor of International Management
  • Dr Massimo Garbuio, Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship
  • Dr Sandra Peter, Director of Sydney Executive Plus

Keynote speakers at the inaugural program include:

  • Alan Joyce AC, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Qantas Airways and Patron, The Pinnacle Foundation
  • Anna Brown OAM – Chief Executive Officer, Equality Australia
  • Justin D’Agostino MH, Global CEO & Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills
  • Kate Humphries, Australian businesswoman
  • The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG – International Jurist, Educator, Former Judge and Patron, The Pinnacle Foundation
  • Paul Zahra, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Retailers Association and Founding Chair, The Pinnacle Foundation.

Program Director, Massimo Garbuio said: “I am thrilled that The University of Sydney and The Pinnacle Foundation have worked together to deliver the LGBTQIA+ Executive Fellowship. It’s a much-needed program in the Asia-Pacific region and will bring together the region’s foremost minds and the latest academic thinking.”

Professor Leisa Sargent, Dean of the Business School, said: “The LGBTQIA+ Leadership program presents an outstanding opportunity for organisations to invest in their LGBTQIA+ leaders, engaging them to lead with impact, strengthen organisational leadership capability and accelerate their networks for career success.”

We are proud to be working together with The Pinnacle Foundation to deliver a tailored leadership development program for the LGBTQIA+ community. It is an important initiative that will have a significant impact on the individual participants and their organisations.

Michael Hall, Director of Executive Education, University of Sydney Business School

The Pinnacle Foundation CEO & Managing Director, Andrew Staite said: “Leading Australia’s LGBTQIA+ education charity, I understand just how important education is to our community. The LGBTQIA+ Executive Fellowship furthers our vision for a more diverse and inclusive society with visible LGBTQIA+ leaders and role models.”
